Whether it's indirect lighting in a walk-in shower, atmospheric light lines on the patio, or architectural facade lighting: as soon as LED technology meets moisture, maximum precision is required. At Fenix Profiles, we know from countless projects: a waterproof LED strip alone is no guarantee for a long-lasting light installation.
In this guide, you will learn how to properly seal LED aluminum profiles against water, which fatal mistakes to avoid when choosing silicone, and when special outdoor profiles or potting techniques are the better choice.
The biggest misconception: "My LED strip is IP67, isn't that enough?"
This is one of the most common mistakes in lighting design. An LED strip with protection class IP65 or IP67 (in a silicone tube) does protect the diodes from water, but it has a huge weak point: the cut edges and solder joints. If these are not 100% professionally sealed, moisture creeps into the tube through capillary action.
In addition, the aluminum profile protects the strip from UV radiation and mechanical stress. However, if a standard profile is not sealed in outdoor areas, it fills with water. The LED strip then lies permanently "in a bathtub" – a condition for which even IP67 strips are not designed in the long run.
Method 1: Sealing standard profiles for wet rooms
For splash water areas (e.g., behind the bathroom mirror or under the roof overhang), you can retrospectively seal many of our regular Fenix aluminum profiles. Proceed as follows:
1. Choosing the right silicone (Vital for LEDs!)
Never use conventional sanitary silicone! This is acid-curing (smells like vinegar). The evaporating acetic acid attacks the sensitive LED chips, the solder joints, and the copper circuit board of the strip, destroying the lighting within a few weeks. You must use a neutral-curing silicone or special LED sealing compounds.
2. Sealing cable outlets and end caps
Feed the connection cable through the hole in the end cap. Generously fill the inside of the end cap with the neutral silicone before placing it on the Fenix profile. The cable must be completely enclosed by the silicone so that no water can enter at the outlet.
3. Inserting the cover (diffuser)
Click or slide the cover into the profile. To seal the edges between the aluminum and plastic cover, draw a fine bead along the joint with the silicone and smooth it out cleanly. This prevents water from penetrating from above through the gap.
Method 2: The professional solution (Potting profiles)
When light lines are integrated directly into the flooring (walkways, driveways) or completely unprotected in the facade, silicone is no longer sufficient. This is where special potting profiles from Fenix Profiles come into play.
These profiles are designed so that they are filled with a liquid polyurethane (PU) or epoxy resin potting compound after the LED strip has been glued in.
- The advantage: After curing, the resin forms a massive, crystal-clear or opal layer. The profile becomes a massive, IP68-certified block.
- The result: The profile is absolutely waterproof, extremely durable (ideal for drive-over floor profiles), and thermally optimally connected.
The hidden danger: Condensation
An often-overlooked physical problem outdoors is condensation. If a profile has not been potted 100% air-free, there is air inside. When the LEDs are turned on, the air heats up and expands. When the profile cools down at night, it contracts and sucks in moist outside air. Condensation forms inside.
Our pro tip: If you install a non-potted profile outdoors, drill a tiny hole (approx. 2-3 mm) through the bottom at the lowest point of the aluminum profile. This creates drainage through which condensation can drain instead of accumulating in the profile.
Conclusion: Plan for safety from the start
Water and electricity are not worth compromising over. With the right combination of high-quality Fenix Profiles, IP-protected LED strips, and professional sealing (or full potting), you create light lines that withstand rain, snow, and shower water for years to come.
