Why install an aluminum profile in wood at all?
Many DIY enthusiasts simply stick LED strips directly onto the wood. This is a fatal mistake for two reasons:
- Fire hazard and lifespan: Wood is an excellent heat insulator. High-performance LED strips get warm during operation. Without an aluminum profile to dissipate the heat, the LEDs will overheat in the wood. The result: the lifespan drops drastically, the luminosity decreases, and in the worst case, heat accumulation poses a risk.
- The aesthetics: A bare LED strip glares and looks unfinished. Only the Fenix profile with an opal cover (diffuser) ensures an even, soft line of light without visible LED dots.
The most important decision: Profile with or without a flanged edge?
Before you grab the router, you need to choose the right profile. Fenix Profiles offers two basic designs for this purpose:
1. The recessed profile with flanged edge (wings)
This is the absolute favorite among carpenters and hobbyists. The profile has a small protruding edge (wing) on the left and right. When you route the groove into the wood, these wings completely cover the routed wood edges. Small splinters in the wood or slight inaccuracies during routing are invisibly covered. The result is always a clean finish.
2. The recessed profile without flange (block profile)
These profiles have smooth side walls. They are used when the metal of the profile should merge completely with the wood without leaving a visible frame. Attention: You must route with absolute millimeter precision and without splintering, as every mistake in the wooden groove will be visible later.
Step-by-step: How to route and flush-mount the profile
Step 1: Determine the routing dimensions. Measure the exact width and depth of the aluminum profile (without wings). Make sure to route the groove about 0.5 mm to 1 mm deeper so that the attached cover later sits absolutely flush with the wood surface.
Step 2: Route the groove. Use a plunge router with a matching straight bit and a parallel guide or guide rail to achieve an exactly straight line.
Step 3: Drill the cable outlet. At the end of the routed groove (where the cable connection of the LED strip will later be), drill a hole completely through the board. This allows you to run the power cable invisibly to the back of the furniture.
Step 4: Glue in the profile. If the profile fits snugly into the groove, simply pressing it in is often enough. For a permanent hold, apply some mounting adhesive or double-sided tape in spots to the back of the Fenix profile and press it into the groove.
Pro tip for a flawless finish
Only stick the LED strip into the aluminum profile after you have vacuumed the wood dust out of the groove and firmly anchored the profile. Press the strip down firmly, feed the cable through the drill hole to the back, and only snap the plastic cover onto the profile at the very end.
